Mobile Hotspot Explainer

What is a mobile hotspot, you wonder?
How does it work, you ask?

Hotspots are locales that offer wireless Internet access through the use of a router connected to an Internet service provider (ISP). Many of us have routers in our homes making them a “hotspot” via a wireless local area network (LAN). Many of us also use hotspots in hotels, restaurants, coffee shops and various other public establishments. The problem is, you can’t take the Internet with you. Until now!

Mobile hotspots are mini portable devices with a tiny modem and router for Internet access you take with you. Imagine taking the same technology used in your 2-story home or at Starbucks, and shrinking it down to personal size – a micro, mobile hot spot.

The size of a credit card, each mobile hotspot device allows data access for up to five different users or devices. Nearly all portable devices are wifi enabled, from laptops to tablets, cell phones, e-readers and more, and all will work with mobile hotspot technology.

Mobile hotspots offer one device/one bill and with a pre-paid option, it can be charged up quickly – with no monthly bill or credit prerequisite - and then easily re-charged as needed either online or in-store. It’s your mobility, your convenience, your Internet.

As we become an increasingly mobile society, the kind of technology that allows for mobility, including payment choices, will definitely be considered “hot.”

New Report Shows Consumers Can Save Nearly $8,000 Annually With Broadband Internet

The Internet Innovation Alliance (IIA) announced on October 11 that American consumers can save nearly $8,000 ($7,694.56) a year by having access to and using high-speed broadband Internet. The study is based on Consumer Expenditure Survey from the U.S. Department of Labor, and shows the Top 10: Potential Annual Savings Garnered by Broadband Connectivity:

The key is doing your spending online. "Broadband service is like a treadmill; you have to use it to reap the benefits," said Bruce Mehlman, IIA Co-Chair. Factoring in the average annual cost of a home broadband connection, the typical American family could save $7,200 per year on essentials like housing, food, clothing and basics like entertainment and travel through discounts and sales only available to online consumers.

“War – (huh) – What
is it
Good For?”

Answer: you!
Which side are you on in the streaming-vs.-Blu-ray battle?

According to PCWorld, the Blu-ray format is holding its own, say analysts--and that isn't likely to change anytime soon. What has changed, the experts note, is this: Streaming video services are becoming more reliable and more popular. The causes? ISPs are boosting their bandwidth capacity, more devices and services to pipe video to your living room via the Internet are coming to market, and Hollywood is increasingly offering popular on-demand content, making it more widely available.

Norm Bogen, a media analyst for In-Stat, estimates that about 18.5 million Blu-ray players will ship in 2011, up from 12 million in 2010. Sony says sales of its Blu-ray will just this year more than 30%.

PCWorld notes, “That isn't to say, however, that high-quality video-streaming technology doesn't pose a threat to Blu-ray. It does.

In-Stat's Bogen says that at the beginning of this year, media-streaming services such as Hulu and Netflix had 25 million subscribers. That number will hit 35 million by early 2012.

Video streaming is gaining momentum as a convenient way to watch movies and TV shows on an HDTV, a computer, a tablet, or a smartphone. Consumers now have at least a dozen ways to stream content to the living room (see "Netflix Inside: A Comprehensive List of Netflix Streaming Devices" for some examples). Video options for tablets, meanwhile, are expanding to include apps from Blockbuster, Hulu, Netflix, and assorted cable providers.

What say you? Will you ditch your discs for the stream?
